Hammersmith Bridge and Boats

This bridge is an extremely rare example of an eyebar suspension bridge.

The Hammersmith bridge we know and love was designed by civil engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette to replace the very first suspension bridge crossing the Thames in the same spot. Resting on the pier foundations constructed for Tierney Clark’s original structure, the beautiful Hammersmith bridge was opened by the Prince of Wales on 11 June 1887. Ornately decorated, its architectural design embodies the Victorian era.
